For African American children and other children of color, the connected pedagogy must effectively challenge the hidden curriculum and expose the ways in which the African American experience is tacitly degraded in schools. W. E. B. DuBois, Carter Woodson, Mary McCleod Bethune, and Fredrick Douglass all affirmed the INTRODUCTION xxxv idea that connected pedagogy for African American children must be (as it has been for centuries) a fundamentally subversive activity with respect to the cultural values of education mainstream America.

Evaluation of a teacher’s pedagogical knowledge, instructional design, or teacher-student interaction have little meaning unless they can be interpreted from all of the frames that matter—the cultural, historical, and social context of the teaching and learning activity. In this vein, the African-centered pedagogy presented in the following pages moves past listing characteristics of the practice of effective Black teachers and toward constructing a system of practice. But without embedding the principles of culturally responsive teaching in a system of practice—such as African-centered pedagogy—they remain prescriptive lists.
